Material Drift

Material Drift explores the transformative processes that occur through the interaction between copper sulfate and aluminum. In these pieces, matter ceases to be a passive support and becomes an active participant. The chemical reactions generate deposits, crystallizations, and alterations that modify the surfaces over time and are, in part, beyond the artist's control.

In contrast to a predetermined image, form emerges from what transpires between the materials. Videos, plates, prints, and material waste are not presented as independent results, but as different stages of the same process. Time acts upon the pieces and is inscribed within them.
In this context, the landscape is not represented, but rather produced within the material itself. Material Drift proposes to pay attention to this becoming and observe how an unstable surface can transform into a landscape.

Material Drift

Material Drift explores the processes of transformation produced through the interaction between copper sulfate and aluminium. In these works, matter ceases to be a passive support and begins to intervene actively. Chemical reactions generate deposits, crystallisations and alterations that modify the surfaces over time and partly escape the artist’s control.
Rather than being determined in advance, form emerges from what takes place between the materials. Videos, plates, prints and material residues are not presented as independent outcomes, but as different states within the same process. Time acts upon the works and becomes inscribed in them.

In this context, landscape is not represented, but produced within matter itself. Material Drift invites us to attend to this process of becoming and to observe how an unstable surface can become a landscape.
