Monographic multidisciplinary artistic project
Site-specific mixed-media installation:
intaglio printmaking, stone lithography, drawing, sculpture, and digital printing
Solnhofen is a municipality in Bavaria, Germany, located in the Altmühl River valley, an area known for its deposits of marine limestone formed during the Jurassic period. Owing to its density, hardness and fine grain, this stone began to be used in the late eighteenth century for the production of lithographic matrices, linking the history of image reproduction to a specific territory and material.
In July 2019, we set out on a journey to the Solnhofen quarries in search of a landscape that could be both the subject and the matrix of our images. The journey became an aesthetic experience whose vistas surpassed every image our eyes had encountered until then: a negative landscape projected onto our retinas like the ghost image of a lithographic stone.
This project brings together installations, sculptural works, prints and audiovisual material that connect geological time, the extractive transformation of the landscape and the reproduction of images. By returning lithography to its place of origin, Solnhofen recovers the material and territorial history that often remains hidden behind the printed image.
The project has been presented in solo exhibitions at the Museo del Mar in Santa Pola, Alicante; Sala Tragaluz in Santa Marta de Tormes, Salamanca; and Sala ES/UM at the University of Murcia.
